TOKYO (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck southeast of the Ryukyu Islands on Wednesday afternoon, seismologists said. No tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate reports of damage.

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake at 5.53 p.m. local time (0853 GMT) was centered southeast of the Ryukyu Islands, or 240 kilometers (150 miles) east of Naha, the capital city of the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, which did not issue a tsunami warning, initially reported the strength of the earthquake at 6.7 on the Richter scale.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, and neither are they expected as the earthquake epicenter was located far from land.
