Strong earthquake strikes off Samoa; no damage reported

APIA, SAMOA (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off the Samoa Islands on early Thursday, seismologists said. There were no reports of damage or casualties.

The 6.2-magnitude earthquake at 6.20 a.m. local time was centered about 198 kilometers (123 miles) southwest of Apia, the capital and largest city of Samoa. It struck about 32 kilometers (19.9 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries and no tsunami warnings were issued.
