Strong earthquake strikes off Indonesia’s Sumatra

JAKARTA (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off southern Sumatra on late Wednesday, seismologists said. No tsunami warnings were issued and there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The 6.3-magnitude earthquake at 11.29 p.m. local time was centered about 135 kilometers (85 miles) west-southwest of the city of Bengkulu, in Indonesia’s Bengkulu province on Sumatra. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika (BMKG), the country’s seismological agency.

No tsunami warnings were issued, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
