TOKYO (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off the coast of central Japan on Sunday, seismologists said, shaking buildings as far away as Tokyo but causing no casualties.

The earthquake at 5.08 p.m. local time was centered about 80 kilometers (50 miles) southeast of the city of Sendai. It struck about 51 kilometers (31.7 miles) deep, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Buildings in Tokyo, about 285 kilometers (175 miles) northeast from the earthquake’s epicenter, shook slightly. “Just experienced my first earthquake in Tokyo, while on the 27th floor of our apartment,” said Nooshin Navidi, a Twitter user.

No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake, and there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

A Tokyo Electric Power Company spokesperson said operations at its Fukushima Daiichi and Daini nuclear power plants were normal after the earthquake. “No troubles are reported as of now,” the spokesperson said.
