Strong earthquake rocks Jakarta
October 16th, 2009 - 5:10 pm ICT by BNO News ( Leave a comment )JAKARTA (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake rocked the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Friday afternoon, officials and witnesses said.
The earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 or 6.5, struck around 4.53 p.m. local time. There was no immediate word on damage or casualties from the tremor which struck about 116 miles west-southwest of Jakarta.
The United States Geological Survey reported the earthquake as a preliminary 6.5-magnitude, while the country’s seismological agency reported it as a 6.4-magnitude. The epicenter was located about 34 miles deep, making it a shallow earthquake. Shallow earthquakes often tend to cause more damage, and increase the risk of a tsunami.
Witnesses in the capital reported feeling strong tremors. No tsunami warnings were issued.
