March 5th, 2010 - 2:59 pm ICT by BNO News ( Leave a comment )SANTIAGO, CHILE (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck near the Chilean city of Calama on Thursday, seismologists said. The earthquake was not an aftershock to Saturday’s 8.8-magnitude earthquake that devastated the country.
The earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 6.3, struck about 39 miles east-northeast of Calama at a depth of 65 miles. A seismologist at the U.S. Geological Agency said the earthquake was not related to the 8.8-magnitude earthquake, saying it is “completely normal” for the region to experience such earthquakes.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from Thursday’s earthquake.
