Strong earthquake hits off Russia’s Kuril Islands

KURIL’SK, KURIL ISLANDS (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off the the Kuril Islands in Russia’s Sakhalin Oblast region on Saturday afternoon, seismologists said. There was no damage.

The earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 6.1, struck about 262 miles east-northeast from Kuril’sk on the Kuril Islands at a depth of 32.9 miles. It happened at 3.45 p.m. local time.

Based on the location and depth, there was no tsunami risk or a potential for damage.

A seismologist at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said a quake of this magnitude is usually “no concern” for this particular area, which is often struck by strong earthquakes.
