Strong earthquake hits Indonesia’s Sumbawa island
May 8th, 2010 - 2:22 pm ICT by BNO NewsRABA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck Indonesia’s Sumbawa island on Saturday morning, seismologists said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The 5.9-magnitude earthquake at 11.22 a.m. local time was centered about 65 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Bima, a city on the eastern coast of Sumbawa island. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika, the country’s seismological agency.
The U.S. Geological Survey measured the strength of the earthquake at 6.1 on the Richter scale.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
On Friday afternoon, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Indonesia’s Talaud Islands, causing no damage or casualties.
