Strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake hits off Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands

SOLOMON ISLANDS (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands on Tuesday morning, seismologists said.

The earthquake, which had a preliminary magnitude of 6.5, struck about 88 miles west-southwest from Papua New Guinea’s Arawa, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. It said the quake struck about 32.3 miles deep, making it a fairly deep earthquake.

No tsunami watches or warnings were issued following the earthquake, which struck around 8.28 a.m. local time (22.28 UTC Monday).
