Strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake hits southern Peru, northern Chile
May 6th, 2010 - 2:40 pm ICT by BNO NewsTACNA, PERU (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck southern Peru and northern Chile on Wednesday, seismologists said, causing blackouts but no major damage, according to witnesses.
The 6.4-magnitude earthquake was centered about 25 kilometers (16 miles) west of Tacna, Peru, and 59 kilometers (36 miles) north-northwest of Arica, Chile. It struck about 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
No tsunami warnings were issued following the tremor, which happened around 9.42 p.m. local time.
