Strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake hits south of the Mariana Islands
July 10th, 2010 - 7:15 pm ICT by BNO NewsMANILA (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck south of the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific on Saturday, seismologists said.
The 6.2-magnitude earthquake at 09:43 p.m. local time (1143 UTC) was centered about 296 kilometers (177 miles) south-southeast of Hagatna, Guam. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially measured the strength of the earthquake at 6.6 but no tsunami warnings were issued.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the earthquake.
