Strong 6.1 quake strikes off the Philippines

HINATUAN, PHILIPPINES (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao, the Philippines on Wednesday afternoon, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The 6.1-magnitude earthquake at 2.47 p.m. local time (0647 GMT) was centered about 115 kilometers (70 miles) south-southeast of Hinatuan, a municipality in the eastern province of Surigao del Sur. It struck about 69.6 kilometers (43.2 miles) deep, making it an earthquake of intermediate depth.

Residents in the region reported feeling the earthquake, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. No tsunami warning was issued.
