Strong 5.8-magnitude earthquake hits southern Iran
July 21st, 2010 - 3:07 am ICT by BNO NewsTEHRAN (BNO NEWS) — A strong earthquake struck southern Iran on Tuesday night, seismologists said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The 5.8-magnitude earthquake at 11.08 p.m. local time (1938 GMT), was centered about 234 kilometers (146 miles) west of Bandar-e Abbas. It struck about 34 kilometers (21.3 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
In November 2009, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck the same region injuring hundreds.
In 2003, at least 25,000 people where killed when a 6.7 earthquake struck near Bam in Kerman province of southeastern Iran.
