Streator Wrecked By Tornado, Police Trying To Rescue Residents

TornadoStreator, June 6, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Saturday night thunderstorms and tornadoes lashed Streator and the results have been quite devastating.

A very powerful tornado which was 50 feet wide Ninth Street in Streator and destroyed everything that came in its way. The police in the region are now trying to rescue the trapped residents and the power and cell phone services have been hit.

The roads leading to St. Mary’s Hospital has been closed by the cops as they do not want any accident to happen. A large number of trees have been uprooted by the storm. In many places they have damaged the cars on the road and also the surrounding houses.

The cell phone service has been badly affected in the southern parts of Streator. The police are trying to prevent people from taking roads where power lines can cause accident and electrocution. The police have also got reports of gas leaks.

In one instance the cops had to arrest one person when he tried to cross the prohibited area even after getting warning from the police. A report has reached the police that six people got trapped in an unspecified location.

St. Mary’s Hospital has set up a triage to cater to the injured lot. The images taken by some media outlets show a twisted gas station and scary pictures of roads replete with debris and glass.

The second stories of some buildings were almost ripped off by the force of the tornadoes. In Elmwood where the severity of the storm was the highest, a movie theatre got badly damaged.

The older downtown buildings were almost destroyed.
