Jan 7, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Noted Sports columnist of Boston Herald, Steve Buckley came out to the world about his hitherto suppressed sexual orientation recently and since then he is hogging the headlines. He wrote an article in his column named “Welcome to my coming-out party”. In the article he candidly wrote about how he had to suppress the fact that he is gay from his family and the world. He wrote “I’ve put this off long enough. I haven’t been fair to my family, my friend and my co-workers. And I certainly haven’t been fair to myself”. He also added that he stopped short of mixing freely with the gay community of Boston. Needless to say after the publication of the post the feedbacks from readers have stared pouring in and a section of them are quite positive and supportive on the issue.
The fellow sports columnists of Steve Buckley have congratulated him for coming out about his orientation. Gerry Callahan his colleague said that it was his image to the readers and his job profile which held him back from revealing the truth for so many years. The 54 year old sports journalist also regretted in his coming out column that it was a mistake on his part to keep his orientation hidden for so long. In fact he had a talk with his mother on this issue earlier and she had encouraged him to come out then but he had developed cold feet.
While his fellow writers have agreed that a section of people can react to his coming out in a negative way, they also said that a person like him should be judged on his professional credential and not by his sexual orientation. Steve Buckley is also apprehensive of the dissent of the homophobic lot but has said that he will derive inspiration from the gay persons who have faced oppression and struggled with the prudes in their lives.
