COLOMBO, SRI LANKA (BNO NEWS) — Sri Lankan peacekeeping troops in Haiti are safe after a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday destroyed large parts of the country’s capital, a spokesman said on Wednesday.
Military spokesman Udaya Nanayakara said that the Sri Lankan troops engaged in the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Haiti were safe following the tremor. Nanayakara said, after communications were established with the force, that the Sri Lankan troops were away from the capital when the earthquake hit.
In Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, the headquarters of the U.N. peacekeeping mission was destroyed in the earthquake. The fate of many U.N. staffers remains unknown.
