Southern Railway Train Company axes toilets from their new fleet of trains
September 20th, 2010 - 12:52 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, Sep 19 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Southern Railway train company has axed toilets from their new fleet of trains. The train fleet is going to run from Portsmouth to Brighton. A train journey between these two destinations would take around 90 minutes.
Since the duration of the train journey is just 90 minutes, so the train company has decided that they could forgo the toilet services. However their innovation or ‘oversight’ hasn’t been taken kindly by the union and the workers.
The union chief has said that this is an oversight on the part of the train company and has said that it is a ‘disgrace’. The Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers’ union (RMT) said that this was unacceptable, even though the length of the train journey was just 90 minutes. The Independent rail passenger watchdog group – Passenger Focus was very worried about the elderly passengers and for especially for the children who were traveling on the train.
In their defense, Southern Railways said in their defense that the toilets were axed in order to create more seats for the passengers. “The route has always had toilets on board in the past. This is the main connection between two major cities on the South coast. One and a half hours without any toilet facilities on board is unacceptable,” according to RMT general secretary Bob Crow.
