SEOUL (BNO NEWS) — South Korean Defense Minister Kim Tae-young on Monday said that a sea mine may have caused the explosion that sank a South Korean warship last week, the Yonhap news wire reported.

North Korea placed some 3,000 sea mines in the region during the 1950-53 Korean War, which it brought in from the Soviet Union. “It is possible that a North Korean sea mine could have drifted into our area,” Tae-young told a meeting of the parliamentary defense committee.
