US President Obama has finally taken the historic decision of nominating the first Hispanic Judge for the Supreme Court. President Obama announced his decision on Tuesday, 26th of May, 2009. The President’s choice was not a shocker because there were speculations regarding Obama’s preference for Judge Sonia Sotomayor.
Sotomayor has provided enough evidence of her diligence and her thorough understanding of the law of the United States of America.
Experts have noted that Sotomayor’s opinions reflect her sincerity and competency. They have commented that her opinions are “models of modern judicial craftsmanship, which prizes careful attention to the facts in the record and a methodical application of layers of legal principles.” With all these attributes Sonia Sotomayor is all set to sit as “one of nine.”
Sonia Sotomayor has always been a fighter who has overcome a number of obstacles to become one of the most respected lawyers in the whole world. She was detected with diabetes at the tender age of 8 but it did not deter her from climbing new heights. Sotomayor has always been open about her medical issue. Her colleague Cesar Perales, President of the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, said, “You could be sitting at lunch with her and she’ll excuse herself. She’ll say, I’ve got to go inject myself … She’s very casual about it. It’s not something that’s held her back in any way.” However, it must be mentioned that Sotomayor’s health was a major topic for a number of discussions before President Obama nominated her as his nominee for the position of Supreme Court judge.
