Son of Sam Parole: David Berkowitz Stays Put
May 12th, 2010 - 12:07 am ICT by Angela Kaye MasonMay 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The serial killer who was known to the world as the “Son of Sam” has been denied parole, for the fifth time. David Berkowitz (born David Richard Falco) is currently serving six life sentences in an upstate prison after his murderous killing spree in 1976 and 1977. During that time he killed six people and wounded seven, striking terror in the hearts of New Yorkers.
In the reports from the New York Daily News, the following reason was given:
“Your actions exhibited a total disregard for not only the law but the lives of innocent members of society,” the state Parole Board said in a decision last Tuesday. “Not only did you harm the victims and their families, but the N.Y.C. community as a whole,” the Parole Board statement read. “Your release is not in the interest of the public safety and welfare,” it later said. The Son of Sam serial killer is serving his time in the maximum security Sullivan Correctional Facility.
According to the Daily News, David Berkowitz wishes to stay behind bars, however he comes up for parole automatically every two years, and will be eligible once again in 2012. At the time of the murders, he claimed that he had been commanded to commit the horrors by his neighbor’s dog who was possessed by a demon. He also claimed to be a member of a satanic cult. Years after being placed in prison, the 56 year old swears to have found religion and now claims to be a “Jew for Jesus”. His new preferred nickname is- Son of Hope.
