GAZA (BNO NEWS) — At least 17 people were injured on early Wednesday when the Israel Air Force struck a suspected terror tunnel in the northern Gaza Strip and a suspected terror tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip.

The operation was carried out in response to two mortar shells fired at the Ashkelon Shore Regional Council in Israel on Tuesday, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said.

The tunnels were located about one kilometer (0.6 mile) from the security fence and were - according to Israel - intended for infiltrating into Israel and executing terror attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers. “Direct hits were identified,” the IDF said.

Over the past few days, a total of four rockets and mortars have been fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip. There were no injuries in those attacks.
