Somali pirates release Singapore-flagged ship after two months
December 29th, 2009 - 12:30 pm ICT by BNO NewsMIDDLESEX, UK (BNO NEWS) — Somali pirates on Monday released the Singapore-flagged container ship Kota Wajar, European officials said.
The ship and its 21 crew members had been held captive since the early morning of October 15 when they were hijacked by pirates about 300 nautical miles north of the Seychelles.
On Monday, the European Union Naval Force Somalia (EU NAVFOR) said the ship and its crew had been released outside Haradere off the coast of Somalia. “EU NAVFOR is monitoring the situation,” the organization said.
It was not immediately clear if any ransom had been paid to secure the release of the crew members. The Canadian warship HMCS FREDERICTON from TF 508 is currently providing medical and logistical assistance to the ship.
At least seven ships with 192 crew members remain hijacked in the region.
