earthquake-solomon1Canberra, Jan 4, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Earthquakes and natural calamities claim the life of thousands of people every year. Two earthquakes that shook the Solomon Islands on Monday around 2148 GMT, have alerted people. The Solomon Islands are located in the “Pacific Ring of Fire” and colliding of tectonic plates often give rise to seismic activities in this area. Though people in this area are accustomed to the natural calamities of this region, they have been panicked after a couple of earthquakes hit the island.

As per the reports, two earthquakes that had hit the Solomon Islands recorded magnitudes of 6.5 and 7.2 and were centered near south-southeast of Gizo. The latest reports indicate that people felt the shocks and rushed away from the coasts. It has come to the news that some houses in Rendova had collapsed after the quakes. However, there is no report of severe damage from the affected places. Some reports of minor injuries have surfaced immediately after the quake and more reports of injuries or fatalities can come up with time.

Though there is no report of severe injury, two earthquakes surfacing on the same day scared people in the coastal region and they are now in fear of tsunamis. However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued any tsunami alert after these earthquakes. Till now, the Australian coastline is safe from any tsunami related threats. Yet, some reports indicate that destructive local tsunamis can rise in the earthquake affected region and there can be some disturbances in the sea. Therefore, people are suggested to stay at safe distance from the coast.
