January 29th, 2010 - 1:33 am ICT by Aishwarya Bhatt ( Leave a comment )Los Angeles, Jan 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Modern Family’s star Sofia Vergara did her bit for the Haiti earthquake victims, by raising $50,000. She pleaded with the host of ‘Lopez Tonight’ George Lopez to let her shave his goatee. She said that, “My Friends at Bic razors say they will donate $50,000 to your Haiti relief fund if you let me shave it (goatee) off right now.” He obliged, and soon she shaved off his goatee, and in the process raised $50,000 for the Haiti earthquake survivors.
A 7-year-old London schoolboy Charlie Simpson was also instrumental in raising over $160,000 for the Haiti earthquake victims. He was upset by the devastation and wanted to do something to help the victims. He took help from his mother Leonora Simpson, and set up a sponsored bicycle ride around his local park in London. He had hoped to raise around $800 with the 5-mile bike ride, but people were so impressed with his idea and enthusiasm, that he raised close to 50,000 pounds in a single day.
Meanwhile the ‘Hope for Haiti Now’ show was also very successful. This show raised close to $57 million. After the show, the organizers also released an album. The Hope for Haiti Now album includes songs by Madonna, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Stevie Wonder, and Justin Timberlake amongst others. All the proceeds of the album will be given to Red Cross, United Nations World Food Program, Partners in Health, Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, Yele Haiti Foundation, UNICEF and Oxfam America. The Canada version of the show had also managed to raise over $9 million. The $9 million will be given to nine non-profit groups like the Canadian Red Cross Society, Care Canada, Free the Children, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam Quebec, Plan Canada, Save the Children Canada, UNICEF Canada and World Vision Canada.
