New York, Feb 11, (THAINDIAN NEWS) With New York City gearing up to tackle a wave of winter weather, officials took the decision of canceling schools under the public school system on Wednesday. Supposedly, the decision was taken before hand in a bid to avoid inconvenience for the parents, so that they could make alternative arrangements for the children.
The decision to close the schools was based on the prediction of the widespread amount of snowfall that the city is expected to witness. The weather forecast predicted that the city was likely to be engulfed by around 8 to 13 inches of snow, along with strong winds. Mayor Michael Bloomberg reiterated that the early decision was taken so that the city residents would have more time to prepare themselves. At the same time, it was revealed that one of the major reasons which led the officials to give the verdict of closing the city schools was to save the children from being exposed from the predicted blizzard-like weather condition. However, Mayor Michael Bloomberg emphasized that it is unsure whether the storm would turn out to be as severe as it was being predicted, but it surely posed major safety hazards.
Meanwhile, the early decision to close the city schools came as a surprise, as last year the administration took the decision rather late- which resulted in widespread confusion among parents and teachers who later revealed that they were not even aware that the schools were closed. Although the schools were closed, the administration made it clear that city agencies would remain open and at the same time the commuters were asked to use public transport instead of driving.
