Snowdrop bulb fetches £725
February 17th, 2012 - 10:18 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattGlasgow, Feb 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A snowdrop bulb which was accidentally spotted by a couple in their garden has fetched a world record of £725. The elderly Scottish couple who offered the unusual flowers for sale are now concerned with the safety of their garden.
The snowdrop has yellow head and markings with white petals. The more common form of the plant is the green and white varieties which are cultivated throughout the country. The unusual variety was spotted in the garden about ten years ago by the couple. When they found the plant, they successfully propagated its variety and named the plant Elizabeth Harrison.
The flower was auctioned on the Internet auction site eBay on Thursday. The final bid of £725 is more than twice the amount that was paid for the previous most expensive snowdrop.
The identity of the buyer has been kept a secret because of security concerns. However the seller whose identity was revealed is concerned that his garden may also not be safe.
Local nurseryman Ian Christie told newsmen that, “I am blown away. I am stunned by the price, £725 for one snowdrop is twice as much as the world record. It is not real. Now I am now considerably worried about the security. I will never see a price like that as long as I live.”
