Snow brings in chaos on Greek roads
March 8th, 2011 - 8:44 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattAthens, Mar 8 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Heavy snow has caused major chaos on the streets of Athens.
The Greek capital saw a snowstorm that has left most of the streets in the city closed. This has caused stretches of traffic jams that have never been seen in the country before. The scene on the streets of the city is that of chaos as drivers try to pass any available path that they find passable.
The government has warned its citizens that they should only make trips that are absolutely necessary. Several schools in the city were closed as a safety measure.
The government is pointing fingers at the company that manages the road for doing poor job in getting the snow out of the roads. The snow that fell were relatively light compared to those that hit other countries like the United Kingdom and United States last year and early part of this year.
The officials have issued a warning that there might be coastal flood when the snow melts. Subsequently residents at those areas have been told to be on the lookout for the rise in water levels.
Meteorologists predict that the temperature would remain sub-zero until at least Wednesday.
