The single-engine plane, a Beechcraft Bonanza which was carrying a total of five people, crashed in the parking lot of the Bank of Oklahoma at Northwest Expressway and Candlewood Drive, according to Lynn Lunsford, who is a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. The plane had taken off from Wiley Post Airport shortly before the crash.
Lynn said the plane reported engine trouble and tried to return to the airport when it struck a tree before crashing near the bank. All five people were injured and fire crews had to cut off the top of the plane in order to remove the victims. The two people in the front seats had the most serious injuries, according to the FAA.
Lynn did not know the condition of the victims but, according to KOCO-TV, all five people on board were critically injured and transported to a local hospital. The station said the victims were three women and two men. No one on the ground was injured.
Official records showed the plane was manufactured in 1976 and was registered to a company in Carson City, Nevada. It’s latest certificate was issued on August 11, 2005 and was still valid when it crashed.
The accident happened just before 8.50 a.m. local time. Lynn said the Federal Aviation Administration is en-route to the crash site to investigate the cause of the accident.
The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified of the crash but does normally not respond to accidents which do not involve fatalities.
