ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Florida (BNO NEWS) — Two people were killed after their plane crashed in northeastern Florida on Saturday, emergency officials told BNO News on Sunday.

The plane took off from an airport in Duval County, Florida on Saturday, a spokesman for the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Department said. It was a type Glass Air aircraft, which is a fixed wing single-engine aircraft manufactured by Barber John A. Two people were on board, both were confirmed deceased.

The plane was part of an aviation club flying experimental aircraft until it broke off from the group, heading to an unknown airport in St. Johns County. The plane was not reported missing until early Sunday, after a helicopter pilot picked up a conversation of a woman who said she had been unable to reach her husband since he took off.

The helicopter pilot interrupted the conversation and advised the woman to notify the FAA, after which authorities issued an alert for the aircraft.

Following the conversation, the helicopter pilot and several other private aircraft launched their own search for the missing plane until one of them found the wreckage at around 10.30 a.m. local time.

According to the FAA, it went down in unknown circumstances in a densely wooded area off County Road 13 in St. Johns County. No flight plan had been filed and air traffic control was not involved in the flight.

Authorities have not released the names of the people on board but, according to FAA records, the plane belonged to Michael L. Harris from Jacksonville, Florida. The plane was build in 1992 and its last certificate was issued on November 13, 2007. It was still valid at the time of the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the accident. The exact time of the crash is unknown.
