Small earthquake rattles northern and central Iran
February 19th, 2010 - 6:58 pm ICT by BNO NewsTEHRAN (BNO NEWS) — A light earthquake shook northern and central Iran on Friday, seismologists said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The earthquake, which happened around 14.55 p.m. local time, had a preliminary magnitude of 4.6, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre. It said the earthquake was centered about 57 kilometers south of the city of Sabzevar, at a depth of 2 kilometers.
Small and moderate earthquakes sometimes cause heavy damage in certain parts of the country due to poor construction. In November 2009, a small 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, injuring more than 700 people.
