Skydiver Felix Baumgartner will attempt to break the sound barrier
February 6th, 2012 - 9:50 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLos Angeles, Feb 6 (THAINDIAN NEWS) It can be regarded as one of the most daring adventures in the world but what Felix Baumgartner is planning to do will take skydiving to the next level. The 42-year-old veteran skydiver has promised that he will sky jump from the edge of space.
Baumgartner will fly a balloon to incredible height – about 23 miles in the sky- and dive from there. The feat will break a 50-year-old altitude record if his plan is successful. According to his plan, Baumgartner will not deploy his parachute until he is just 5,000 feet from the ground. Due to the high altitude at the height, Baumgartner will rely on an astronaut suit and an oxygen mask to survive the fall.
Baumgartner is a renowned Austrian helicopter pilot. This is not the first time that Baumgartner will be going after a record. He already holds four records in skydiving. He was the first person to skydive across the English Channel in 2003. He also holds the record for the highest jump from a building when he jumped from the 1,479-feet Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur.
In 1960, U.S. Air Force colonel Joe Kittinger skydived from 102,800 feet in the sky and that has been the world record since.
