GALVESTON, TEXAS (BNO NEWS) — Dozens of passengers suffered minor injuries when the Galveston-based Carnival Ecstasy made a sudden maneuver near Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula on Wednesday, Carnival Cruise Lines said on Thursday.

The company said the incident happened around 12.55 p.m. Central Time when the cruise ship was forced to perform a maneuver to avoid hitting a large buoy. “The object was a large buoy which was adrift and mostly submerged thereby preventing it from being detected by the ship’s radar,” a statement said.

The ship was on the final leg of a five-day cruise that departed Galveston on Saturday with stops in Cozumel and Progreso, Mexico. It docked in Galveston this morning as scheduled.

Sixty guests who sustained minor injuries were treated at the ship’s infirmary. The company also said there was some minor damage to merchandise and unsecured objects on board the ship.

“Carnival sincerely apologizes for the distress and discomfort this occurrence has caused our guests,” the company said. “The safety, comfort and care of our guests and crew is our top priority.”
