Siblings fight over MLK estate

- Atlanta, Oct 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) In an interesting court case, 2 siblings are fighting with their brother and Martin Luther King’s son whom they accuse of mishandling the late civil rights leader and their father’s estate.
Jury selection is all set to take place on Monday.
Bernice King and Martin Luther King III sued their brother Dexter King in July 2008, one month after accusing him of converting “substantial funds from the estate’s financial account at Bank of America” for his own use, according to the lawsuit.
Dexter King is the estate corporation’s president and chief executive, in addition to being the estate’s administrator. All three siblings are the only shareholders in the corporation, and the plaintiffs hold at least 20 percent of its outstanding shares.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville had tried to encourage an out-of-court settlement between the three siblings, of the company that controls the legendary Martin Luther King’s legacy and an estate worth millions of dollars. He has appointed an auditor to investigate the dispute.
The Rev. Joseph E. Lowery, a King family intimate, said he remains hopeful the family can resolve the dispute without a long court fight, which would be for public consumption also.
“People are hurt and saddened to see Martin’s children at each other’s throats instead of finding a way to resolve their differences through love and nonviolence,” he said. “They owe it to their family legacy not to foul it up with fights, bitter court fights and that sort of thing. It is contrary to what the King legacy is all about.”
Former associate of Martin Luther King, Lynn Cothren said the three siblings only should decide King Inc.’s future.
“If Dexter knows they want to call the meeting in order to fire him, I guess what he needs to do is call the meeting,” said Cothren, a longtime special assistant to Coretta Scott King for 23 years. “If you’re going to be voted down, then you need to take it like a man, and if you don’t have the confidence of the other shareholders, then you need to step down.
“That is the way any corporation is run.”
