Shortage of single ladies drives men into committed relationships
September 18th, 2010 - 3:00 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattSep 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new study have found that in places where the female population is less then the single women are married off faster when compared to places with a high population of women.
The study, which was carried out on metropolitan areas in America, shows that men at places where single women are fewest have more reasons to marry them earlier than places where the number of single women were higher.
The results of the study which was published in the Evolutionary Psychology journal on August 4 points to the fact that men tend to compete for women where women are scarce.
Evolution Psychologist at the University of Michigan, Daniel Kruger, conducted the study. Kruger said he was inspired to conduct the test after he saw a cover of a magazine when he was on a trip to New York City.
He recalled that the magazine cover had the inscription “Attack of a Single Woman” along with a picture of a giant woman with a big red dress. He said that got him thinking of the effect surplus women will have on relationships.
Kruger next analyzed census data on the age women were marrying off and the gender balances of 50 largest metropolises in American. He then calculated the ratio of men to women in each of the metropolitan areas.
After analyzing the figures, Kruger realized that in the metropolis where the number of men was higher than that of women, the women tend to marry early.
