Shirley Sherrod Gives Resignation After Making Racist Comments

July 20, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The United States Department of Agriculture has confirmed that the Shirley Sherrod, the director of the USDA’s rural development agency, has issued her resignation after a video was released by a news source that showed her making overtly racist comments while addressing the audiences at a NAACP meeting. The video tape that has been made public shows reportedly shows excerpts of the NAACP meeting that was held Douglas, Georgia in the month of March this year.
In the clip Shirley Sherrod is seen divulge details about how she refused to provide assistance to a while farmer who was facing bankruptcy. In the meeting, the black Agriculture Department employee says that she was finding it difficult to come to terms with the fact that so many black were losing their farmland while she was confronted with the problem of having to help a white farmer. Shirley Sherrod also revealed that she took him to a white lawyer as she felt that someone ’someone of his own kind’ would be able to help him while also mentioned that she did give him the full force of what she was capable of doing, but according to her she did enough.
It did not come as a surprise that the racially charged comments made by Shirley Sherrod has received widespread criticism owing to which ultimately she had to step down from her post. In a written statement that was released by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, it was confirmed that the department’s director of rural development agency has resigned while adding that there is zero tolerance level for discrimination of any kind in the department.
