balloon-boyColorado, Jan 16, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The media reports that a little boy was seen floating in a homemade hot balloon designed by his father had shocked people in October, last year. The incident that had stunned several people was later declared a hoax and Richard Heene, the mastermind behind the entire incident is now facing the tough time. Richard Heene, who is often referred as the balloon dad, after this incident, has landed in jail for planning the hoax to garner media attention. Though the balloon dad pleaded guilty in the Sheriff’s court, healsotried to prove himself innocent.

The imprisonment sentence of Richard Heene for ninety days has come into effect from January 11, 2010. Before the jail term was effective, Richard Heene made several attempts to wash off his hands from the case and appeared in some television shows to get his names cleared. It has been reported that the balloon dad claimed that the entire event was not a hoaxin a popular show.

Richard Heene also stated that he had pleaded guilty for the charges as he wanted to save his wife. He added that if he had not pleaded guilty then his wife could have been sent to Japan. To influence the decision of the sheriffs, he even called the sheriff a liar. He said that the sheriff had made false claims by stating that he had informed the media sources before calling 911 for help. Though the balloon dad made repeated attempts to prove himself innocent, the decision of the sheriffs did not change and he will have to serve the entire term.

Although I believe that this was a publicity hoax, I also believe Mr Heene in his statements about threats to deport his wife and lies by the officials were his true basis for pleading guilty. It is regrettable that Police and prosecuters, in general, will do anything to get a conviction. Especially going far beyond the concepts of integrity and morality. We desperately need a complete overhall of the justice system in this country as the poor are “auomatically” guilty and the rich can “buy” their innocence and freedom.
