Shark Attacks: More Reasons To Avoid The Beach On Sunday

May 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A recent study has revealed that shark attacks are most likely to happen on Sundays in less than 6 feet of water. The research was based on statistics recorded over 50 years in Florida’s Volusia County which is called the shark attack capital of the world. Though it is obvious that Sunday there are more surfers in the water, the research ranked Saturday as the 2nd most risky and Friday the 3rd most.
George Burgess, director of the International Shark Attack File at the University of Florida explained that Fridays have also become a common day for shark attacks because of people taking an off on Friday to get a three-day weekend. The research says that sharks do not want to eat humans but attack mistakenly thinking they are seals or other fishes. The researches counted heads of the people on the beach for years and also monitored the rate of shark attacks in the crowded beaches. George Burgess also said that the research explains the frequent shark-human interaction in the Florida coastline. But one point in the research that surfers can take heart from is that the sharks in this area are not the gigantic ones like that near California. The shark bite is more lethal than a dog bite and cannot exactly be called an attack.
Another important factor that causes shark attack rates to rise is the full moon. This has a direct relation to the reproductive patterns of fishes which are the shark’s primary food source. Also common cause of attacks are victims wearing black and yellow swimsuits that further confuse the shark.
