September 14, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): A group of nine people who had survived after being attacked by sharks came together at the United Nations last Monday. They wanted to plead for saving their attackers.
The diverse group comprising of individuals most of whom were missing a limb said that if they could see the wisdom behind saving sharks the others should wake up to the facts too Debbie Salamone, a 44 year old reporter from Florida was vociferous about saving the endangered species. . She had sustained a severed Achilles tendon after being attacked by a shark while she stood in waist deep water.
The Pew Environment Group who organized a rally for saving the deep water creatures gave out startling facts like the killing of 73 million sharks every year which found their way into the shark fin soup, considered to be a delicacy in Asia.
The group further stated how the fishermen just sliced off their fins before leaving them to bleed and die. Selling the shark fins helped them make a lucrative income at $300 per pound.
A navy driver by profession, Paul de Gelder said that it was shocking we were killing off the sharks all for a bowl of soup. He has lost his right hand as well as his right leg when the sharks tore them off his torso at the Sydney Harbour. He recounts how he had tried to get the shark in the eyeball only to find his hand within the mouth of the large sea creature. Despite being maimed for life, de Gelder made it a point to come all the way to New York in order to speak out for the creature which could not speak for its own survival.
The Pew Environment Group says that 30% of all the varieties of sharks including the great whites, whitetips, smooth hammerheads and threshers are about to become extinct if we do not take adequate measures.
Matt Rand the present director of Global Shark Conservation said that there has been no scientific management for the number of sharks that can be caught. This has simply led to wide spread destruction and mutilation without any limits whatsoever.
