Shanghai adopts one dog policy
February 25th, 2011 - 9:59 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattShanghai, Feb 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The authorities of the Chinese city of Shanghai have introduced a new policy that would make it illegal to have more than one dog.
The city officials estimate that more than 600,000 dogs in the country are ‘illegal’. The officials said that they had to take the drastic decision after several people got bitten last year by dogs. The officials believe that with the policy they would be able to control the mess that the many dogs in the city pose.
The new rule also outlaws certain breeds of dogs in the city. Dogs that are more than 3ft would not be allowed to be brought to the city center. Other fierce dogs like the bulldog and other such dogs would not be allowed in the city all. Shanghai has a population of more than 20 million. The city officials estimate that about 600,000 dogs in the city are not licensed and as such have been declared ‘illegal’.
Officials would be hunting down such dogs from their owners. Last year more than 140,000 people in the city reported to the police that they have been bitten by dogs. Most of the people who are bitten by the so-called “illegal” dogs end up getting rabies.
