Princess Diana Lady Diana Spencer wore a black taffeta gown just a few weeks after her engagement to Prince Charles in 1981, which eventually led to her becoming Princess Diana. That dress recently sold for a staggering $276,000 at an auction.

Although it was only estimated to sell for approximately $61,000, the black taffeta gown with a plunging neckline sold for far more. It was designed by Elizabeth and David Emanuel and brought in almost 4 times what it was suspected to bring.

A fashion museum in Chile bought the dress from the London auction where it was the main attraction of the day. The sell was of items from the archives of the Emanuels and was held at La Galleria, which is located in Central London. It was conducted by specialist vintage fashion auctioneers ‘Kerry Taylor Auctions’.

Lady Diana was just 19 when she wore the dress to a black tie event which was held at Goldsmith’s Hall in March of 1981. It was her first official engagement with Prince Charles, her new fiance. She looked absolutely glamorous in the photos which were taken of her on that night.
