WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) – Secretary of State Hillary Clinton congratulated Togo on Tuesday for their national day.

“On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I congratulate the people of Togo on the 50th commemoration of your national day on April 27. On this historic occasion, we join you in celebrating the progress that Togo has made and looking forward to the promise of the years to come,” Clinton said.

Clinton expressed the importance of Togo’s presidential elections which were held on March 4, marking important steps toward democracy and good governance.

“The United States believes in Togo’s potential and we are committed to Togo’s future. Let us redouble our efforts to broaden the partnership between our governments and deepen the friendship between our peoples,” she added.

Togo gained its independence from France in 1960, and it had the longest-serving leader in modern African history with Gnassingbe Eyadema becoming president in 1967 until his death in 2005.
