hillary-rodhan-clinton WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sent her congratulations to the Polish people and government on the anniversary of their first Constitution, the State Department Press Office announced on Monday.

“The United States celebrates this day with you and commemorates the establishment of Europe’s first constitution. The quest for freedom, human rights, and the rule of law that inspired Poland’s leaders 219 years ago is still evident in your vibrant democracy,” said Clinton.

The Constitution of Poland was adopted on May 3, 1791. It was the first modern European constitution. The most important contributions were the introduction of equality between citizens and nobility, and the protection of peasants by the government ceasing abuses of serfdom.

“As we have seen once again, your people and your nation are strong and resilient. The world saw this in the wake of the tragic plane crash that took the life of your President and so many other distinguished citizens.”

“Poland today is a beacon of freedom and liberty with a bright future, and our strong partnership will continue to grow as we confront many of the world’s greatest challenges together.”
