WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton congratulated on behalf of President Barack Obama and the American citizens, the people of Italy on the 64th celebration of its Republic Day, the State Department Press Office informed on Tuesday.

“This is an opportunity to honor the vibrancy of Italian democracy and reaffirm the shared values that are the foundation of our alliance, including freedom, equality, and respect for human rights and the rule of law,” Clinton said.

The Republic Day, or “Festa della Republica” in Italian, is celebrated on June 2. It commemorates the institutional referendum of 1946 when Italians decided what form of government (monarchy or republic) the country should have after World War II and the end of fascism.

Clinton said that the United States and Italy are linked due to the histories of both nations and the millions of Italian immigrants who helped build America.

“We are linked by strong ties of culture and commerce, and by the bonds of family and friendship,” Obama said. “I wish the Italian people the very best and look forward to building an even brighter future together.”
