Second Major Earthquake Of 2010 Hits Venezuela

EarthquakeVenezuela, Jan 16, (THAINDIAN NEWS) After Haiti, it was now the turn of Venezuela to be hit by an earthquake. A quake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale hit Venezuela causing little or no damage to either houses or humans. What it did cause was a lot of mishap and fright among the locals who were scared after the terrible Haiti quake. The South American country experienced shaking on Friday, early morning (18.00 UTC). The center of the quake has already been located- lying 375 KMs east of Caracas. The epi-center seems to have had a depth of 11.7 KMs. This news was released by the United States geological Survey. The main regions that felt the quake were 40 KMs South-West of Carupano, 75 KMs East of cumana, 80 KMs North-West of Maturin and 375 KMs East of Caracas.

Simultaneously, Friday morning, the people of Oklahoma witnessed an earthquake too, say sources. The quake measured 4.0 on the Richter scale when it hit at 9.18 AM in the morning. The exact location has been pin pointed to 3 miles northeast of Jones in Oklahoma. However, the quake apparently did not result in any kind of injuries or damages.

According to the USGS, the earthquakes are not a common factor in the Rocky mountains of Oklahoma. The concerned authorities commented that large regions, starting from the Rockies till the Atlantic- witnesses quakes only once in a while. “They can go years without an earthquake large enough to be felt, ” said the executives. They further elaborated that in the recorded history, the states of United States have never gone through an earthquake that has caused much damage.
