Staten Island, Feb 5 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Schoolboy Patrick Timoney was in for a major surprise, when he brought a two-inch Lego toy gun to school. He was shocked when he was suspended for carrying the gun to school. Patrick studies in the 4th grade at PS 52 in Staten Island, New York. The 9-year-old boy Patrick brought his Lego’s to school, to show it to his friends during lunch.
Unfortunately the principal Evelyn Matroianni of the school saw the gun, and asked him out of the class, and subsequently called his parents.
The spokesman for the city’s Department of Education defended the hard stance taken by the Principal Evelyn Matroianni, and said that she was just following the “no tolerance” policy of not allowing any weapons on campus. However on the other hand, his mother Laura thinks that the school overreacted. “This isn’t a safety issue,” she said. “This is a judgment issue. I mean, what’s the worst that could happen? It could poke you in the eye?”
Laura said that her son Patrick was moist eyed, when she was called to school. He was also asked not to come school on the next day, as the Principal was unhappy with him.
