Michigan, Dec 9 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Students could view the first snowfall of the season today with most Oneida and Herkimer county school districts closing due to the bad weather.

Only the most northern districts in Oneida County, in Camden and Adirondack remained open after delaying the classes for 2 hours.

This year’s winter is turning out to be quiet unexpected, because last year by mid December most schools had already been closed for three days.

“Each winter is different,” said Oneida-Madison-Herkimer BOCES Superintendent Howard Mettelman. “But typically we have a snow day before Thanksgiving.” In 2009, the area broke the 1902 record of most days between snowfalls.

On Wednesday morning, there was a couple of inches of snow, but the main reason for the closing is the warning of sleet and ice that is expected to hit about 11 a.m. “Our priority is to make sure the kids are safe,” Mettelman said.

In Worcester and several other school districts in Central Massachusetts have also canceled school today because of the bad winter weather.

There was a mix of snow and sleet that hit the state early this morning. And the National Weather Service also reported heavy wind gusts in some areas. Around Boston there was around 8 inches of snowfall. And the snow is expected to melt as temperatures rise later in the day.

Also there has been an advisory by the Michigan State Police to motorists that roads are slushy and slippery this morning after overnight rain, snow and sleet swept through southeast Michigan. Side roads are especially messy, state police Sgt. Craig Nyeholt said. Few accidents have been reported, he said.
