Tehran, Sep 10, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Sarah Shourd, one of the three detained US hikers who were held since last July, is set to be released by Iran. A spokesman from the Iran authority released a statement yesterday where it was maintained that Sarah Shourd, an American “hiker” will be released very soon. Sarah Shourd used to work in education and social justice, in Damascus where she was providing educational opportunities to refugees from the war in Iraq.
Sarah Shourd was arrested by Iran authorities along with Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal on last July 27,2009. Tehran accused them of entering the border illegally and having links with US intelligence. The families of the accused however said that the three of them were in northern Iraq’s Kurdistan region and they crossed the border by mistake. It seems that the Iran Government after their investigation found out that Sarah Shourd really did not have any link with US intelligence and hence the Government took the decision of releasing her on Saturday, September 11, 2010. The spokesman of Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance told all the reporters to be present at a north Tehran Hotel tomorrow for witnessing the release.
This news brought in a wave of happiness in Sarah Shourd’s family and her lawyer Masoud Shafii told in one of his statements that the American hikers. who are detained by the Iran authorities are not spies. However, they had been held for over a year without a trial and he feels that according to law, everyone should be released. U.S. State Department spokesman P. J. Crowley said that nobody knows what the “Iranians” are contemplating but it will be a welcome news if the hikers are released by the Iran Government.
