July 19th, 2009 - 7:14 pm ICT by GD Tell a Friend -

san-fRight on the heels of the fatal monorail crash at Walt Disney Worlds earlier this month, comes the news of another accident in San Francisco involving two light rail trains. Reports state that almost 48 people had to be dashed to the hospital to be treated for injuries; four of them are reported to have been inflicted with severe injuries.

The authorities said that the accident occurred at the West Portal station, when a San Francisco Municipal Railway L train went and nudged the one in front of it severely. The train that had been rear ended was stationary at the boarding platform at that point of time, at 2:30 p.m, said the officials.

The Deputy Chief Pat Gardner of the San Francisco Fire Department said that none of those who have been injured in the accident lost their consciousness and most, had suffered from moderate injuries. Most of the people injured in the accidents are adults. Among those severely injured, is the operator of the L train. Witnesses accounted the incident and said that the west bound L train barged right in to the K train, emerging from the tunnel that connected downtown San Francisco to the western peripheries of the city. The impact of the collision smashed the front of the L train, the K train escaped with minor damages.

Shuttle buses were fetched in an effort to step in as a substitute service between West Portal and Castro stations, and West Portal Station and the other western stops, for the K/T, L and M Muni Metro lines.
