San Francisco, July 3, (THAINDIAN NEWS) An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.3 on the Richter scale was felt in the San Andreas Fault in California. The earthquake was reported to have caused a tremor from Santa Rosa to San Luis Obispo four days back. However the earthquake was a minor one and fortunately caused no harm to the residents of the region. The United States Geological Survey reported that the first tremors were felt at 7o’clock in the morning last Monday.

This tremor, which occurred five miles below the sea surface towards the northwest of the San Francisco Zoo, was shortly followed by two others, one at 08:05 and the next at 10:07 in the morning the same day. In spite of the earth shaking three times, no damage has been recorded so far.

Ross Stein, a geophycisist at the geological survey situated in Menlo Park said that the recent earthquake in California was showed features of “thrusting”, a phenomenon in which one layer of the earth moves above the other in the case of an earthquake. The compression between two faults in the San Gregorio Fault was the most likely cause of movement on the earth’s surface says the geophysicist. The people of San Francisco residing in the districts of Sunset and Richmond could also feel their houses move under the effect of the earthquake which occurred on Monday morning, reported the press. People living close to the San Francisco Zoo, the epicenter of the earthquake are absolutely safe as are the animals housed in the zoo, though it is still unknown whether they had been disturbed at the time when the earthquake took place.
