BAGHDAD (BNO NEWS) — Saddam Hussein’s cousin Ali Hassan al-Majeed, internationally best known as Chemical Ali, was executed on Monday for his crimes against humanity, a government spokesman said.
Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh confirmed the execution was carried out, but provided no further details.
al-Majid was recently sentenced to death for his involvement in a poison gas attack on Halabja in 1988, which killed more than 5,000 Kurds. He was also sentenced to death for other crimes against humanity.
al-Majid showed little remorse at the time of Saddam’s regime. “I will kill them all with chemical weapons!”, al-Majeed said during a meeting with Ba’ath Party leaders in 1988, according to a transcript released by Human Rights Watch (HRW). “Who is going to say anything?”, al-Majid continued. “The international community? F[explicit] them! The international community and those who listen to them.”
